With a total land area of 2.8 sq. km (2006 census), the town of Kaslo is situated on an alluvial fan where the Kaslo River flows into Kootenay Lake. To reach Kaslo:

  • From Nelson follow Hwy. 3A north to Balfour and then continue on Hwy. 31 to Kaslo.
  • From the East follow Hwy. 3 to Creston. At Creston travel north on Hwy. 3A to the ferry at Kootenay Bay. Enjoy a free ferry ride across Kootenay Lake to Balfour and follow Hwy. 31 north to Kaslo.
  • From Kelowna follow Hwy. 97 to Vernon. At Vernon turn east on Hwy. 6 and continue on Hwy. 6 through Nakusp to New Denver. At New Denver, turn left onto Hwy. 31A and follow to Kaslo.


The village of Kaslo is the largest community located on the main body of Kootenay Lake. Most of the village of Kaslo sits on the floodplain formed by the outflow of the Kaslo River. The remainder of the village is located on bench land above the downtown core. The village is framed by the Purcell Mountain Range to the east and the Selkirk Mountain Range to the west. Mount Loki (2,779m/9,117ft) rises dramatically across Kootenay Lake and is a popular hike for locals. The Selkirks are home to the Goat Range and Kokanee Glacier Provincial Parks. Both parks offer a full range of four season recreational opportunities.


The population of the village of Kaslo is 1,072 (2006 census) and that of the area known as Area D of the Rural District of Central Kootenay is 2,600.

Proximity to Kootenay Lake significantly influences Kaslo´s climate. At 591 m (1939 ft.), Kaslo experiences mild, moist winters and warm, dry summers that are influenced by proximity to a large body of water that never freezes. Winter lows and highs average - 4.9°C/23°F and plus 0.6°C/33°F respectively.


2006 census date lists the three industries employing the most people in the community of Kaslo as Logging and Forest Products, Manufacturing (primarily wood products) and Accommodations and Food Service.

Facilities in and around Kaslo include a 9 hole golf course, Ice Arena for public skating, hockey and curling, a number of Provincial Parks and campgrounds, a skateboard park, public beaches, tennis courts and riding arena.

Boating, sport fishing, swimming, water-skiing, kayaking, canoeing, scuba diving, hiking, mountain & tour biking, ATV touring, golfing, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, cat-skiing, heli-skiing, paragliding.


Kaslo and the surrounding area is served by a volunteer Fire Department, a Provincial Ambulance Service, a Provincial Government Agent, and policed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.


Kaslo provides educational opportunities for all ages. Facilities include Periwinkle Children´s Centre for ages 2 ½ to 5, J.V Humphries School for Kindergarten to Grade 12 and Selkirk College for Adult Basic Education, Continuing education and Distance Learning.

Arts, Culture and Heritage

Kaslo abounds with Arts, Culture and Heritage! The North Kootenay Lake Arts and Heritage Council sponsors the Kaslo Saturday Market; an annual Art Walk in the downtown area; Art in the Market summer programs; and an annual Gallery Show at the Langham Cultural Centre. The Langham Cultural Centre provides ongoing public programming, theatre events, and many gallery exhibits. Visit Live Art to watch local artists creating their works and then tour our many art galleries and historical sites including two National Historical Sites, City Hall and the S.S. Moyie. Don´t miss the world famous Kaslo Jazz Etc. Summer Festival each August long weekend.
